With the design now finalized it is time to make it happen. Timing is an important issue at this point. Many people start planning their new garden in the spring and then find all the contractors are fully booked. Then when the construction is finished in July it is the worst time to plant especially if you are planning on holidays. So think ahead.
Construction
You may wish to select your own contractor or I can recommend one (depending on the area). It is vital to use a proper landscape contractor don't be tempted by the builder who is just finishing your rear extension, preferably use one where you can inspect examples of their work. You may wish to supervise the works or I can monitor the work as it progresses and liase both with the contractor and you.

Planting
I can arrange for the plants to be supplied and planted or you may wish to do this yourself. If you do it yourself it is vital that the exact varieties specified are used. Timing is vital, a lot of shrubs are grown abroad (eg Italy) and only arrive in the country at given times in the year, with professional help you are less likely to end up with tired old plants. Small young plants can often overtake their bigger older cousins in a couple of years so be patient. That said a few large specimens will get a garden off to a flying start. It is very important to prepare the soil properly, it is far easier to get the structure of the soil correct before there are any plants in the way.

Opening party
Nothing left to do but get your friends round, corks off the bubbly, canapés, a little light music. well that's what they do on the TV.

Garden revisited
I am happy to do a consultative visit from time to time to monitor the progress of the garden and find solutions to new problems or changed requirements. |
